What is safe period? You are a young woman and actively involved in unprotected sexual intercourse. You may have gotten pregnant once or twice in the past and now want to prevent pregnancy from occurring.
There are several methods of preventing pregnancy, but in this article, we will be discussing the use of the safe period.

Safe period after menstruation

Safe period is that period of the month when a woman is least likely to get pregnant. Your knowledge of ovulation and menstrual cycle is key to understanding your safe period.
Are there conditions you can avoid getting pregnant?
Couples that have achieved their required number of children can implement the safe period method to prevent unwanted pregnancy.
Some governments also dictate the number of children a couple can have and the knowledge of safe period will be very useful in such cases.
Women can use the safe period method to avoid getting pregnant for social, economic and career reasons.
Women with a serious medical condition like breast cancer, complicated valvular heart disease, ovarian cancer, epilepsy, hypertension, etc. can choose to avoid pregnancy by applying the safe period method.
A woman with any of these conditions can still get pregnant but has to seek the advice of the doctor.

Menstruation and safe period

The menstrual cycle is a natural phenomenon in a woman. It occurs monthly and lasts for 28 days on average. Some women may have a menstrual cycle that lasts for as little as 21 days while others can have it as high as 35 days. The average range for the menstrual cycle is 21-35 days.
The calendar method shows the menstrual cycle is divided into

• The period: A woman's period lasts 3-5 days on average. The safe period calendar attached shows a woman's menstrual cycle. The woman's period started on the first, and this corresponds to her first safe day.
• The safe period: The safe period commenced on the first day through the seventh day, and the woman is not likely to get pregnant during these days. Pregnancy may still occur if you have irregular periods.
• Unsafe or Fertile period: This started on the 8th day through the 19th day. Having unprotected sexual intercourse during this period will likely lead to pregnancy. A woman with a 28-day cycle that is regular will probably ovulate on the 14th day. Yellow or brown mucus discharge are signs of pregnancy. Your safe period continues after the fertile days until your period starts, and the cycle repeats itself.
